Vignetted studio bust portrait albumen CDV. Philadelphia: W. L. Germon's Atelier, 702 Chestnut St., [ca. 1862]. Photographer’s imprint to mount verso. Verso also bears a pencil collector's inscription: "COL LOUIS R. FRANCINE / 7TH NJ / KIA GETTYSBURG / MW 7-2-1863 / DOW 7-16-1863."
A member of a prominent Philadelphia family, Col. Louis R. Francine led his "Jersey Blues" into the thick of the fighting on 2 July 1863. While his regiment was engaged in the desperate defense of the Peach Orchard salient, Francine was struck in the leg by a shell fragment while bravely encouraging his men to hold their position against a massive Confederate assault. He was evacuated to Philadelphia, where he succumbed to his wounds on 16 July, just two weeks after the battle. He was posthumously brevetted brigadier general for his conspicuous bravery.
The CDV is a fine wartime study from the Philadelphia studio of Washington L. Germon. Francine is depicted in his officer’s frock coat, the image capturing his youthful resolve and the polished appearance typical of Philadelphia’s volunteer officer corps. Given the backmark, this portrait was likely taken near his home during a leave or prior to the 1863 campaign. It remains a poignant visual record of an officer whose life and promising military career were cut short at the war's most critical turning point.
Francine is remembered as one of New Jersey’s most devoted and heroic field commanders. His leadership of the 7th New Jersey, a regiment that suffered heavily while defending the exposed III Corps line, was vital in slowing the Confederate advance long enough for Union reinforcements to arrive. His death was deeply felt in both New Jersey and Philadelphia, and his name is inscribed on the New Jersey Monument at Gettysburg as a testament to his ultimate sacrifice.

Good clarity and tonal range within the vignette; typical age-related foxing to the mount.
