Second type McKeever cartridge box. Watervliet, [New York]: Watervliet Arsenal. Approx. 7 x 4 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches. Stamped "Watervliet Arsenal".
WITH Eight (8) rounds of .45-55 caliber carbine ammunition. One is headstamped "F / 12 / 88," one is headstamped "F / 12 / 89," and the rest are headstamped "F / 2 / 91".
ALSO WITH Springfield M1876 combination tool.
Designated the second type for the small outward bulge where a combination tool, as included with this example, would be held. The second type McKeever cartridge box was manufactured for use with the standard-issue Springfield trapdoor rifles of the late 19th century. The 20 canvas loops can each snugly fit a .45 caliber cartridge, the caliber employed by both the Springfield M1873 and M1884.
