Partly printed document signed by Thomas Jefferson, as President of the United States, and James Madison, as Secretary of State. Washington, D.C., 20 January 1809. 1 page, visible 14 x 8 1/2 in. With original Presidential wafer seal. Matted and framed to 22 x 16 in.
A land grant signed by President Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) allowing Henry Medsker of Pennsylvania to buy land in Ohio as part of "An act providing for the sale of the Lands of the United States in the Territory north-west of the Ohio, and above the mouth of Kentucky river."
This purchase was made possible by the Land Act of 1796, where a Surveyor General led a group of surveyors to identify land northwest of the Ohio River and above the mouth of the Kentucky River, "in which the titles of the Indian tribes have been extinguished," so others could buy the land from the government. Land could be sold for $20 for a quarter of a township, sections of the land that were split into six square-mile chunks, or $6 for 640 acres. In this land grant, Medsker purchased a quarter lot near the mouth of the Great Miami River.
An excellent Jefferson presidential document.
