Two (2) CDVs of Washington & Lincoln (Apotheosis). Philadelphia: J.A. Arthur, 1865. Based on art by S.J. Ferris. One mount recto includes copyright information. Both mount versos have modern pencil notations.
Two CDVs of the Apotheosis, which is a depiction of George Washington welcoming Abraham Lincoln to heaven with a wreath of laurels. One of the CDVs depicts a wider scene with angels in the top left corner also welcoming Lincoln with open arms.
The word "apotheosis" is defined as elevating a person to a divine status. Washington can be seen as a god-like entity holding a wreath of laurels above Lincoln's head, which can be traditionally interpreted as a martyr receiving a crown. This image was issued after Lincoln's assassination, no doubt influencing the emotional aspect behind the art.
