Presented post-Civil War undated model Revenue-Marine sword. New York: Shannon, Miller & Crane, ca. 1883.
28 in. double-edged, spear-point blade. Overall 36 in. Ricasso etched "Shannon / Miller & Crane / New York". Blade is acid-etched with floral and botanical motifs, including oak leaves and acorns, as well as patriotic and naval symbols, including an eagle with an "E. Pluribus Unum" ribband in its beak, a pair of flags and liberty pole, and a pipe-smoking sailor leaning against a net. White shagreen grip with 14 wraps of braided wire. Pommel is ovoid, guard is marked "USRM", and dual folding counter guards bear, respectively, an eagle and the inscription: "Capt. Alfred B. Davis / U.S.R.M. / with kind regards of / O. D. Conger / Aug 9th 1883". Complete in leather scabbard with brass mounts; center mount engraved with a fouled anchor and topmount with a Revenue-Marine insignia, with a seashell-shaped stud for a leather frog.
Alfred B. Davis (1832-1913) was promoted to captain in the Revenue-Marine in the midst of the Civil War. He oversaw several vessels, including the USRC Andrew Johnson on the Great Lakes in Wisconsin 1883, the year he was awarded this sword. The sword was notably presented by an "O. D. Conger," possibly Michigan Senator Omar Dwight Conger (1818-1898), whose state directly benefitted from the Revenue-Marine's actions on the Great Lakes.
The now-defunct Revenue-Marine, later Revenue Cutter Service, was one of two branches which merged to form the extant United States Coast Guard in 1915. Though the Revenue-Marine existed for over a century, the service recruited far fewer than the other United States military branches. As such, these officers' swords are extremely rare.
