Post-Civil War undated model Revenue-Marine sword. N.p., n.d. M1843 blade marked Philadelphia: W. H. Horstmann & Sons, n.d.; manufactured [Solingen, Germany: Gebruder Weyersburg, n.d.]
The 25 7/8 in. double-edged blade was evidently intended for a m1843 Revenue-Marine Officer's sword, per its distinctive oval cross-section. The correct "W. H. / Horstmann / & Sons / Philadelphia," used ca. 1843-1863, is etched to the blade. The ricasso bears a Gebruder Weyersburg king's head mark, and the blade is acid-etched with floral and botanical motifs, as well as patriotic and naval symbols, including an eagle with an "E. Pluribus Unum" ribband in its beak, a pair of flags and liberty pole, and a pipe-smoking sailor leaning against a net.
Complete in leather scabbard, the sword is 34 1/2 in. overall. The grip is of lacquered and white-painted shagreen with 13 wraps of double-strand braided wire, with a spot of wear along the seam revealing the original white shagreen beneath. Pommel is ovoid, guard is marked "USRM", and one of the dual folding counter guards bears a federal eagle, while the other is unmarked.
The now-defunct Revenue-Marine, later Revenue Cutter Service, was one of two branches which merged to form the extant United States Coast Guard in 1915. Though the Revenue-Marine existed for over a century, the service recruited far fewer than the other United States military branches. As such, these officers' swords are extremely rare. There is some pitting to the blade and tarnishing to the grip, else this sword is in very fine condition.
