Winchester 1893 Type B 27813 Pump Action Rifle. 12 Gauge. Newhaven, Connecticut: 1893.
Metal pump plate stamped with shorthand manufacturer's identification: "Winchester 1893." The barrel is stamped with complete manufacturer's identification. Base of mag tube stamped with "B 27813." Barrel 19in. Overall 37 1/2 in. long.
Most of the metal is smooth with a thick, untouched, chocolate patina over all of the surfaces. The pump is lightly colored with minor wear around frizzen screws. Stock exhibits minor pitting and wear, likely due to use.
John Browning's first pump-action design, the Winchester 1893, was a slightly problematic first attempt. It gained moderate success, but after a four-year production, it was replaced by the M1897, which would become a widely popular shotgun. The M1893 was ultimately its action was to weak to be able to properly handle smokeless powder. Despite its later replacement, the M1893 is still a fine example of a first attempt at a pump-action rifle design.
