A bloody fracas has erupted aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge. Sword fighting ensues, and pistols are drawn among the corpses of those already slain. At the center is the formidable Edward Teach, better known by his fearsome pirate sobriquet Blackbeard. His raven beard twisted into iconic braids, he brandishes two pistols, aiming one directly at a shoeless deckhand. Though bearing a blunderbuss, his fate seems a foregone conclusion. The Battle of Ocracoke would be Blackbeard's Last Stand. Teach and his crew were ambushed by British forces, and though he fought with his trademark ferocity, he would be shot 5 times and slashed more than twenty. His head was severed from his body and hung from the masts as proof of his death.
Rick Reeves (b. 1959) of Tampa, Florida, is a master of American military paintings, devoting exceptional detail to the uniforms, flags, and landscapes. His paintings reveal a profound understanding of the battlefield and a sensitivity to the pivotal moments of war.
