A ne plus ultra portrait of a pirate threatening his foes in the midst of battle, with several open wounds. Brandishing a pistol in his left hand and flourishing a sword in his right, he is every bit the marauding seaman. Shirtless, save for a kerchief, he has equipped himself with two shoulder belts, one holding his scabbard, and the other a powder horn.
Rick Reeves (b. 1959) of Tampa, Florida, is a master of American military paintings, devoting exceptional detail to the uniforms, flags, and landscapes. His paintings reveal a profound understanding of the battlefield and a sensitivity to the pivotal moments of war.
