- Lot Description
Brass cartridge box plate bearing an encircled Royal Cipher beneath a crown, ca. 1778 - 1784. Inscribed "Butler's / Rangers" to circular border. Approx. 2 1/16 x 3 in.
18TH CENTURY BUTLER'S RANGERS BOX PLATE.
Butler's Rangers were a prominent and notoriously ruthless Tory regiment raised by the eponymous Lieutenant Colonel John Butler (ca. 1728 - 1796), consisting of American Loyalists who had fled to Canada at the outbreak of the war. Alongside British-allied Native American forces, the rangers wrought havoc throughout New York and Pennsylvania. They were key participants in the Wyoming and Cherry Valley massacres.

Condition
The brass exhibits light verdigris and a dark patina, but traces of the original brass finish are visible. There is significant wear to the crown and loops. Condition is as shown.
