Autograph letter signed by William Irvine. Carlisle, [Pennsylvania], 3 May 1785. 2 pages, 4to, with docketing to verso.
An autograph letter signed by Revolutionary War General William Irvine (1741-1804). Here he writes regarding money owed an Irish merchant in Belfast. In part: "direct a sum of money, which is due me in Ireland to be made into the hands of Mr. Samuel Brown Merchant in Belfast - you will please to include the letter directed to James Lindram Esqr."
Irvine was originally from Ireland and studied medicine and classical literature at Trinity College Dublin. He served as a ship's surgeon on a British man-of-war during the French and Indian War and afterwards immigrated to America, settling in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He quickly became involved in politics, serving as a delegate to the State Revolutionary conventions (1764-1766).
At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War in January 1776, he was commissioned a Colonel and raised the 6th Pennsylvania Regiment. In June, he was captured at the Battle of Three Rivers during the Lake Champlain campaign. He was not exchanged until May 1778. A year later, he was promoted to Brigadier General of the 2nd Pennsylvania Regiment. Near the end of the war on 25 September 1781, he was given command of the Western Department, headquarters at Fort Pitt. Although Cornwallis had surrendered in October, skirmishing continued on the western frontier, and the British still held Detroit. He was a frequent correspondent with General George Washington, discussing the deplorable state of Fort Pitt as well as tactics.
He continued as a prominent politician representing Pennsylvania at the Continental Congress (1787-1788) and later in the United States House of Representatives (1793-1795).
