  William Lloyd Garrison (1805-1879), editor. The Liberator. 5 issues. Vol. XXXIV, Nos. 14, 18-20, & 31; Whole Nos. 1730, 1734-1736, & 1747. Boston: J. B. Yerrington & Son, printers, 1 & 29 April, 6 & 13 May, and 29 July 1864. 

   

  4 pages, folio, approx. 17 7/8 x 24 7/8 in. Disbound.  

   

  Five issues of William Lloyd Garrison's abolitionist newspaper, The Liberator, from the late spring and summer of 1864 at the height of the war. Covering the ongoing war, the paper retains its focus on universal emancipation, threats to its cause (especially the copperhead movement), and rights for freedmen. 

   

  Notable headlines include: "Universal Emancipation", "Constitutional Emancipation", "The Government and the Colored Troops", "Pay of Colored Soldiers", and "Treatment of Freedmen - A Modified Form of Slavery".
