Measures 19 x ~24 inches, overall.
A large-format launch photograph of Friendship 7, signed by three members of the original Mercury Seven: John H. Glenn, Jr., M. Scott Carpenter, and Walter M. “Wally” Schirra, Jr. The image shows the Atlas LV-3B rising from Cape Canaveral on 20 February 1962, carrying Glenn on the first American orbital mission. Smoke and flame engulf the gantry as the rocket clears the pad, a moment broadcast to millions and remembered as one of the Cold War’s turning points in space.
Glenn has inscribed the print, “Best regards to [name] – John Glenn, Friendship 7,” while Carpenter and Schirra added their signatures alongside. The combination is rare and fitting: three Mercury astronauts together on the most famous launch of the program—Glenn, the first to orbit; Carpenter, who followed on Aurora 7 in May; and Schirra, who flew Sigma 7 that October.
A significant memento of the year when American manned spaceflight came of age, bringing three of its first astronauts together on a single, historic image.
