Quarter plate half-length studio portrait tintype. N.p., n.d. Separated full leatherette case. With a newspaper clipping affixed to the image verso.
An intriguing portrait of a young man wearing an antebellum militia uniform that may have been inspired by continental times. Interestingly, a newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the plate. This clipping features a humorous poem that reads as follows:
" Tis' a libel to say I've no love for any / If the truth must be told, I love but too many / but what in the name of love can be done / when I love all too well to be tied up to one! "
The subject's uniform features two rows of very large domed brass buttons from the collar to the waist and another set of the same buttons on his white cuffs. A plain brass rectangular belt plate hooked to a black leather belt completes his look. He may have hailed from any number of state units that leaned into Washington-era style themes to inspire their uniforms.
