- Lot Description
An pair of rectangular engraved brass gallery presentation placards, ca. late 19th to early 20th century]. Each plate features pre-drilled mounting holes at the outer margins and are currently un-mounted.
An exceptionally elegant and beautifully crafted pair of historical presentation placards celebrating the enduring legacy of the American Revolution. Custom-manufactured during the height of the late 19th-century Colonial Revival movement, these heavy brass strips feature introductory text that reads VALLEY FORGE in a bold, crisp Roman block font, while the specific scene narratives are executed in a sweeping Spencerian script.
The individual titles map out two of the most iconic narratives of the Continental Army's historic winter encampment of 1777–1778:
1. "The Foraging Party": Celebrating the desperate, heroic efforts of commanders like Anthony Wayne and Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee to gather vital provisions from the surrounding Pennsylvania countryside to sustain a starving army.
2. "Washington's Headquarters": Documenting the revered stone Isaac Potts House, which served as the operational nerve center for General George Washington and his staff during the crucible of the encampment.
Featuring precise, pre-drilled screw holes at the outer edges, these placards were not intended for outdoor public exposure; instead, they were custom-commissioned to be mounted directly to the lower margins of monumental gallery frames, exhibition pedestals, or archival museum display cases. They represent a sophisticated, highly tangible artifact from the golden age of early American historical commemoration.

Condition
The two brass placards are in very good to fine condition. The brass plates remain structurally flat and rigid, exhibiting a beautiful, warm patina with minor, honest surface handling marks and localized tarnish that accentuates the depth of the text.
