Document signed by mark by George Anderson. Bedford County, [Virginia], 26 May 1772. 1 page, approx. 7 5/8 x 8 3/8 in. Docketed to verso.
A salacious legal document from the late colonial period, recording a sworn statement in which a man named George Anderson issues an apology for slandering the daughter of Colonel William Calloway (1714–1777). Calloway was a prominent Virginia planter and militia officer who commanded troops during the French and Indian War and later served with distinction in the Revolutionary War. He also held an important civic role, presiding over the first court in Bedford County and representing his district for thirteen sessions in the House of Burgesses.
In the document, Anderson publicly retracts his charge that Miss Cara Calloway had stolen money from him, writing in part: “Whereas Miss Cara Callaway by Col. Wm. Callaway her Father & next Friend hath instituted ag[ains]t me a Suit for speaking words injurious to her character, to wit; that she stole from me a sum of money; & whereas I am desirous to make Reapartion to her for speaking such words: I do hereby declare that I had no Reason for speaking such words.”
The full circumstances behind the accusation remain unknown, yet the apology highlights both the influence of Colonel Calloway and the protections extended to his family.
An interesting glimpse into the interplay of honor, reputation, and authority in eighteenth-century Virginia.
