Studio bust portrait of James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok. N.p., n.d. Unmarked. Approximately 2 3/8 x 3 1/2 inches. Pen inscription to verso reads: “James Butler ‘Wild Bill’ Hickok / To Candy Hammer / from Ogden Hickok,” above “5808” in blue type.
This portrait of James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok successfully captures the ruggedness associated with the American West. Hickok’s face is angled to the left, his face anchored by his well-known mustache. He sports a flat, pancake-style hat atop his shoulder-length curls. Known for his flair, Hickok wears a white, collared shirt that contrasts against his vest and jacket, with what appears to be a cravat around his neck.
“Wild Bill” Hickok, born James Butler Hickok (1837-1876), was an iconic figure of the American Old West, renowned for his sharpshooting skills, law enforcement work, and colorful exploits. He gained fame as a gunfighter and scout, participating in numerous gunfights and serving as a marshal and sheriff in various frontier towns. Hickok's reputation was further enhanced through his association with figures like Buffalo Bill Cody and Calamity Jane. His distinctive long hair and mustache, along with his penchant for wearing a wide-brimmed hat and carrying a pair of Colt revolvers, contributed to his legendary image. Hickok’s life was cut short when he was shot and killed during a poker game in Deadwood, Dakota Territory, in 1876, cementing his status as one of the most enduring symbols of the Wild West.
Ogden Pottinger Hickok (1916–1976) was the great-nephew of Wild Bill Hickok. He was born nearly 40 years after the death of his famous uncle.
