A Trench Art Artillery Shell Vase
French, circa 1918
Brass artillery shell casing with repousse and hammered patriotic decoration, including a Federal eagle with shield and an American Expeditionary Forces banner.
Marked D 1918 16 D 75 DEC to underside.
Height 13 3/4 inches.
Spent shells, casings, along with shrapnel and other remnants of conflict, provided soldiers, prisoners of war, and civilians with the raw materials to craft vases and other decorative objects that memorialized their wartime experiences. The notations on the underside of the casing indicate that it came from a French 75 mm field gun, model 1897.
