Paul Cadmus (American, 1904–1999)
Attributed.

A refined and highly expressive portrait study associated with the celebrated American artist Paul Cadmus—renowned for his mastery of draftsmanship and his pivotal role in 20th-century figurative art.

Executed in pen and ink with delicate tonal modulation, this work presents a striking male profile rendered through a dense network of controlled cross-hatching. The composition demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of volume, structure, and light, allowing the face to emerge with sculptural clarity and psychological presence.

The exaggerated yet harmonious facial features—accentuated gaze, strong jawline, and carefully articulated contours—reflect the stylistic tendencies often associated with Cadmus, where classical technique meets a subtly modern interpretation of the human figure.

Cadmus remains an essential figure in American art history, particularly recognized for his exploration of the male form and his contribution to the visibility of identity and individuality within figurative practice. Works connected to his aesthetic continue to attract collectors who value technical excellence combined with cultural and historical relevance.

This piece stands as a compelling example of that tradition—intimate, skillfully executed, and visually impactful—making it an appealing acquisition for collectors of fine drawings and academic portrait studies.
