A powerful intaglio print by Georges Rouault, representing Plate IV from his celebrated Miserere series, one of the most important graphic works of the 20th century. Executed in Rouault’s unmistakable expressionist style, the composition is defined by bold, sculptural black contours and deeply spiritual figuration, reflecting themes of suffering, redemption, and human dignity.
The print has been examined out of frame and is executed on period laid paper bearing the Ambroise Vollard watermark, visible under transmitted light. Vollard, the renowned Parisian dealer and publisher, was responsible for issuing the Miserere series, and the presence of this watermark is consistent with authentic impressions from the 1948 Étoile Filante edition.
The sheet displays a strong, well-inked impression with visible plate mark and characteristic tonal richness. The image bears the date “1922” within the plate, corresponding to the period of Rouault’s development of the series.
The work is presented in a substantial giltwood frame reportedly from Spanierman Gallery, New York, adding both provenance interest and display presence.
A significant and highly collectible example from Rouault’s Miserere, a series widely held in major museum collections including MoMA and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The sheet shows age-related toning, particularly to the margins, along with areas of discoloration consistent with prior matting and long-term display. The image itself remains bold and visually strong. The print has been examined out of frame.
The frame is of high quality and presents well overall, with visible wear including surface abrasions, losses to gilt, and minor corner wear.
