Paper label and spine of both volumes “23 V;” with bookplates on front pastedown endpaper of both volumes, “Edward D. Mansfield,” ( Edward Deering Mansfield (August 17, 1801 —October 27, 1880), was an American lawyer, journalist and writer) and “Cavendo tutus (Safe through caution) Francis Dana.” With, “Edmundi Dana Liber Frani Dana,” in ink on front free endpaper of Volume 1, with” J. A. Davidson,” in pencil on front free endpapers; with “John A. Davidson 1964,” in ink of front pastedown of Volume 2.
With bookplate of Francis Dana (June 13, 1743 – April 25, 1811), “Cavendo tutus (Safe through caution) Francis Dana,” who was an American Founding Father, lawyer, jurist, and statesman from Massachusetts. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1777–1778 and 1784. A signer of the Articles of Confederation, he was secretary to the diplomatic mission that negotiated the end of the American Revolution, and was appointed Minister to Russia. He later served as a member of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts and served as the chief justice for 15 years.
