He moved to New York in 1959 after receiving a Guggenheim fellowship, and it was in New York that he began a fruitful exchange of ideas with some of the leading Abstract Expressionists of the time. This dialogue between traditional Japanese painting and the themes and styles employed by the Abstract Expressionists can be found in much of his later work, including in the present lot.
