A first edition of the famous memoirs of Pierre de Bourdeilles, Seigneur de Brantome. The book details his life growing up in close proximity to the royal court and the various courtiers of the era, of whom he gives a straightforward account of their activities and oftentimes odd sexual proclivities. He gives general biographies of many of the important ladies of the court, as well as an account of the greatest military leaders of France. He also gives accounts of homosexuality within the court, in addition to a very detailed description of the female genitalia.
De Bourdeilles himself lead a life of adventure, accompanying Mary Queen of Scots when she returned to Scotland to assert her authority, joining Don GarcÃa de Toledo in his conquest of Badis in Morocco, joined the Order of Malta, aka the Knights Hospitaller, aboard their war galleys, and accompanying his friend Filippo di Piero Strozzi in his ill-fated expedition to Terceira. During the French Wars of Religion he fought for the Catholics under King Charles IX, during which time he suffered a fall from his horse which left him permanently injured. It was during the retirement caused by this fall that he began to write his memoirs, which were not published until many years after his death.
This book includes the bookplate of Stafford Henry Northcote, 1st Earl of Iddesleigh (1818-1887), one of the most prominent politicians of Victorian England.
This First Edition was published in 1665 and 1666 in Leiden, now the Netherlands, by the firm of Jean Sambix.
