A fine, handcolored engraving of the English stately home known as Shurdington, created by the Dutch artists Jan Kip and Leonard Knyff for their famous 1707-1709 work 'Britannia Illustrata', an important collection of unusually detailed views of English country estates. The caption reads 'Shurdington the Seat of Dulcibella Laurence Relict of Wm Laurence'. The coat of arms of the Laurences is at the center of the caption.
Kip and Knyff were both accomplished artists in the Netherlands who followed William of Orange to Britain upon his ascension to the English, Scottish, and Irish thrones. This work appears to have been started during William's reign but was not published until the reign of his successor Queen Anne, the first monarch of the United Kingdom.
Great Britain, c. 1707.13 1/2 x 17 in., (34.3 x 43.2 cm.)
