Carved from a single block of dense hardwood and modeled in the form of a stylized animal head, possibly a goat or ram, with prominent curved horns and an articulated lower jaw operated by pressure on the handles. The elongated, tapering handles form the legs of the figure, terminating in smoothed ends darkened by handling and use. The head is sensitively carved with a pronounced snout, inset eyes, and textured surface suggesting fur, retaining a deep, warm brown patina consistent with age and repeated handling. The mechanical action remains simple and robust, characteristic of early utilitarian nutcrackers produced in rural Alpine or German-speaking regions during the nineteenth century. Such objects were commonly made by local craftsmen and intended for domestic use, combining folk-art sculpture with practical function.
L: 8 3/8 in., (21.4 cm.)
General age-related wear throughout with surface abrasions and minor losses consistent with prolonged use. The jaw mechanism appears intact and functional.
