The slender straight steel blade of triangular section, retaining areas of original deep blue finish and gilt decoration, the surfaces etched and highlighted with scrolling foliate ornament, stylized flames, and decorative motifs typical of court and presentation swords of the Napoleonic era. The gilding applied over etched reserves contrasts against the blued ground, now partially worn but still clearly visible along the upper portion of the blade. The gilt brass hilt is finely cast and chased, the knuckle bow and guard decorated with classical ornament and terminating in masks, the oval guard plate centered with a shield bearing a heraldic lion in relief, flanked by laurel swags and trophies. The grip fitted with a white mother-of-pearl slab grip, secured by gilt ferrules, and surmounted by a gilt pommel cap. The sword retains its original blackened steel scabbard with a single suspension ring, showing wear consistent with age. This refined sword represents the type produced in the Belgian and Northern French workshops during the First Empire period, intended for court wear, ceremonial use, or presentation rather than field service.
L: 35 1/4 in., (89.5 cm.)
Good with gilding and bluing partially lost. The scabbard is missing.
