A finely cast bronze of a grazing horse, after the well-known wax and clay studies by Edgar Degas. The sculpture captures Degas’ characteristic attention to anatomical structure and natural posture: the animal bends forward to graze, its weight distributed delicately across four slender legs, the surface modeled with expressive, almost sketch-like texture. The patina is a deep, even brown-black, consistent with mid-20th-century French foundry work produced after Degas’ estate casts.
Degas created numerous studies of horses between the 1860s and 1890s, many of them in wax. Most lifetime casts are exceedingly rare; the majority of bronzes on the market are posthumous editions authorized by the heirs or produced later “after Degas.†The present example fits that later tradition, showing good quality and faithful adherence to the original proportions.
H: 9 3/4 in., (24.9 cm.), L: 12 3/8 in., (31.4 cm.), W: 3 7/8 in., (9.8 cm)
