A bronze sculpture entitled 'Maternity' by the famous Hungarian Jewish artist Chaim Gross (1904-1991). The piece depicts a young pregnant woman with a classic 1950s style hairdo as she leans back, supporting the weight of her pregnant belly. The piece is signed and dated in the bronze toward the bottom of the base.
Chaim Gross was born in the village of Ökörmező in Hungary in 1904 and moved with his family to Kolomiya in what is now Ukraine at a very young age. The Russian invasion during WW1 displaced his family, forcing them to flee until the Austrians could retake the town. In the years after he began attending the art academy in Budapest, studying under Béla Uitz (1887-1972). However, he would soon be expelled along with most of the other Jews of Hungary by the orders of Miklós Horthy. He first fled to Vienna before making his way to New York City, where his artistic career would flourish.
