A BRONZE MILITARY GABION INKWELL OR PENHOLDER, CONTINENTAL, MID-19TH CENTURY.

The open top was originally intended to hold an inkwell liner or pens. Patinated surface with traces of wear consistent with age.
Such desk objects, often cast in iron, were popular in the mid-19th century as commemorative or decorative items reflecting contemporary interest in military fortifications and artillery engineering. They were produced in France, Germany, and Austria for officers, collectors, and enthusiasts, symbolizing the role of the engineering corps in battlefield strategy.
H: 5 in., (12.7 cm.)
Surface with age-related wear, oxidation, and minor abrasions; lacking inner liner or cover; overall good decorative condition with strong detail.
