The slightly curved single-edged steel blade of typical briquet form, retaining a broad fuller along the spine and showing areas of age-related patina and oxidation. The brass hilt is composed of a knuckle bow and stirrup guard with rolled quillon terminal, the ribbed grip integrally cast with the guard and capstan pommel, in the classic French infantry pattern introduced in the late 18th century and continuing in service well into the 19th century. The inner face of the guard stamped "VERSAILLES", accompanied by inspection or arsenal marks, indicating manufacture at the Royal and later Imperial arms manufactory at Versailles. The sword fitted with its original black leather scabbard, mounted with brass throat and chape, the chape terminating in a rounded drag. The piece represents the long-lived briquet short sword carried by French line infantry, artillery, and allied troops throughout the Napoleonic period and beyond, valued for its durability and symbolic association with French military service.
L: 29 1/2 in., (75 cm.)
The blade is pitted throughout the entire surface. Chipping along the edge and tip of the blade. The blaed does not fit the scabbard all the way.
