A French oval jewelry casket, dating to the 1920s–1930s, featuring a striking red Bakelite lid set into a finely cast and chased gilt bronze (ormolu) frame. The lid is mounted with a circular hand-painted portrait miniature of a classical woman in profile, wearing a red headscarf, under convex glass. Surrounding the medallion are applied garlands and festoons in neoclassical style, symmetrically arranged in a radiating star-like pattern.
The sidewalls of the box are richly ornamented in Louis XVI style, with continuous swags, bows, and hanging floral arrangements cast in high relief. The hinged lid opens to reveal a deep crimson velvet-lined interior, both in the lid and the base.
The bottom of the box is covered in a textured gold-toned fabric, completing the refined presentation. No visible maker’s mark, but typical of high-quality Parisian or Viennese decorative boxes of the interwar period.4 3/4 x 3 3/4 x 1 3/4 (12.1 x 9.5 x 4.4 cm.)
Condition
The box is in very good antique condition overall. Typical light wear to enamel and gilt surfaces, but no major losses or structural damage. The detailing is crisp, and the portrait remains vibrant, making it a fine example of a late 19th to early 20th-century French-style decorative box.
