A nicely made French dagger produced during the second half of the 1800s and sold by the firm Leon Chobert, Arquebusier, in Paris. The double-edged blade with two long fullers to each side and a staggered edge, the lower half of the blade being slightly wider. The twisted grip is wrapped in braided wire and finishes in a rounded pommel with twisting grooves. The quillons ending in a similar manner to the pommel, emanating from a small guard which has been stamped with Chobert's mark and their address '16 Rue Lafayette, Paris'. The dagger is kept in a steel sheath of simple construction.
Paris, France, second half of the 19th century.
L: 12 3/8 in., (31.4 cm.)
Light pitting to the blade consistent with age. Some pitting to sheath throughout. Nicely patinated. Scabbard with a small dent.
