- Lot Description
A German Imperial lion head sabre produced by the famed Solingen firm of Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie. The hilt is of gilt brass, with a large knucklebow, foliate relief decoration, and the iconic lion head pommel, complete with red glass eyes. The blade is etched on both sides for the first half of its length, showing classic military motifs such as armor, weapons, shields, and banners, all set amongst foliate scrollwork. The blade is kept within a blackened metal scabbard to which is affixed one attachment ring. The famous double-head king and knight mark of W K & C. can be seen stamped at the base of the blade, as well as the words 'geschutztes muster' stamped into the top of the hilt. This form of the W K & C mark is only known to have been used between 1883, when the original two companies merged, and 1918, when the king's head was removed following the end of the Empire.

Condition
Blade with some spots of pitting and/or rust, particularly toward tip. Etching well preserved. All parts tight. Hilt with only minimal signs of age. Scabbard with some dents, scratches, and loss to finish. Blade fits scabbard well.
