A fine side-by-side 19th-century German double-barreled percussion hunting shotgun, Kuchenreuter. The barrels are inlaid with a silver inscription: "Barth: Joseph. Kuchenreuter a Ratisbonne." The gunmaker was Joseph Barth Kuchenreuter of Regensburg (Ratisbonne in French), a city in Bavaria, Germany. The Kuchenreuter family were famed gunsmiths, particularly active from the 18th into the 19th century. They supplied arms to nobility and royalty and were known for high-quality craftsmanship. This shotgun is likely dating from the mid-19th century (circa 1840–1860). The barrels are engraved with fine scrollwork and inscriptions. The locks are side-by-side percussion locks with engraving, showing excellent craftsmanship. The stock is a richly decorated walnut stock with relief carving, floral motifs, and inlaid silver mounts, especially around the trigger guard, buttstock, and forend. Triggers: double set triggers (common on high-end German hunting rifles of the period).
Circa 1840–1860.
L: 47 5/8 in., (121 cm.)
Barrels show very light patina, consistent with age. The engraved lettering ("JOSEPH BARTH" and "KUCHENREUTER A RATISBONNE") is still sharp. Engraved percussion locks are intact with visible detailing. Triggers and guard metal elements show mild wear and light surface scratches; the double-set trigger appears intact. The stock is walnut in good condition with visible checkering and deep relief carvings. It shows minor surface scratches and handling marks are visible, especially on the buttstock. Decorative silver inlays are mostly intact and well-seated. Scrollwork and carving are detailed and largely well-preserved. The engraving on the top of the barrel and sideplates remains crisp, indicating minimal over-cleaning or restoration.
Good action.
