A traditional jambiya dagger, with a curved double-edged steel blade, the hilt is made of metal alloy, inlaid with white metal and oval medallions. Leather-covered wooden sheath. This characteristic short, strongly curved dagger was worn by men throughout Yemen and the southern Arabian Peninsula as a symbol of status, masculinity, and tribal identity. The blade is of pronounced crescent form with a raised medial ridge, typical of functional jambiya blades intended for both ceremonial and practical use.
The hilt is formed in the classic jambiya shape, widening at the pommel and narrowing at the grip, and is decorated with white-metal inlay and oval medallions, arranged symmetrically along the grip. The surface shows wear and patina consistent with age and prolonged handling. The guard is subtly articulated and engraved with a simple geometric ornament.
The dagger retains its original leather-covered sheath, constructed over a wooden core and sewn along the edges. The sheath curves to follow the blade profile and displays surface wear, abrasions, and areas of color variation consistent with long use. The survival of the sheath is notable, as jambiya scabbards were frequently replaced due to wear.
Overall, the dagger represents a well-preserved example of a 19th-century Yemeni jambiya, combining functional craftsmanship with restrained decorative elements. Such daggers were worn daily as part of traditional dress and served as markers of social standing, regional affiliation, and personal honor.
L: 12 3/4 in., (32.4 cm.)
The dagger is in good overall condition, consistent with age and traditional use.
