Carved from a substantial and richly banded malachite block, modeled as a stylized ceremonial or ritual mask with strongly defined facial features, almond-shaped eyes, pronounced nose, and full lips, the surface is animated by the stone’s natural concentric and striated patterns in deep emerald and lighter verdant tones. The headdress is elaborately articulated and fitted with applied silver mounts, including engraved plaques, crescent and feather-form elements, and geometric panels, some set with small hardstone accents, all contributing to an eclectic, pre-Columbian or Mesoamerican-inspired aesthetic. The reverse is left largely natural, revealing the raw crystalline structure and natural cavities of the malachite, emphasizing the material’s geological character. Mounted on a stepped black marble plinth with a silver-mounted base rim engraved with a repeating geometric border, the sculpture is conceived as an imposing decorative object intended for display.
H: 15 in., (38.1 cm.) bae included L: 13 1/4 in.,(33.7 cm.)
Very good overall condition. Minor edge wear and small natural fissures inherent to the malachite, with scattered surface abrasions visible under close inspection. The silver mounts show light wear and oxidation.
