- Lot Description
A long flintlock blunderbuss of Caucasian type, likely Dagestan or Circassian, with a dramatically flared steel barrel engraved overall with dense swirling and foliate patterns typical of regional repoussé and chiseling traditions of the 19th century. The muzzle is wide and trumpet-shaped, emphasizing its ceremonial and intimidating character rather than purely ballistic efficiency. The barrel is secured to a long hardwood stock by engraved silver mounts and bands, including a pierced and chased silver collar with floral ornament.
The stock is richly decorated with inlaid bone and horn elements arranged in geometric and talismanic motifs, including almond-shaped plaques and circular dot inlays, combined with numerous brass pins creating a dense ornamental surface. Such inlay patterns are characteristic of highland Caucasian arms, where firearms served as markers of status, masculinity, and clan identity. The butt is flat and slightly splayed, fully decorated with bone inlays and retaining a horn or bone edge trim. The iron flintlock is engraved with scrolling ornament and remains consistent with regional workshop production.
