Of finely carved ivory, the cylindrical body with turned and ringed sections, terminating in a carved elephant head finial wearing a ceremonial headdress. The elephant’s trunk is curled and detailed with incised lines, while the eyes and ears are carefully rendered. The surface shows an attractive age patina with natural stress lines typical of 18th-century ivory. A suspension chain is attached to the collar.
Such powder horns were both functional and symbolic, often carried by Indian nobility or military officers. The elephant, a symbol of strength, wisdom, and divine power (linked to Ganesha), suggests this was not a utilitarian piece alone but also a prestige object.
Similar carved ivory powder horns and flasks with zoomorphic heads are in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and in private Indo-Persian arms collections, dated to the 17th–18th centuries.
L: 9 1/4 in., (23.5 cm.)
Overall, very good condition with rich, even patina. Age-related shrinkage cracks and minor discoloration are consistent with 18th-century medium. Finial carving well-preserved with no apparent restorations; small stable fissures visible along the body. Chain with expected tarnish.
