Of traditional oval kovsh form with raised prow-shaped lip and curved scrolling handle, finely crafted in silver with a fully gilded interior and base. The exterior is lavishly decorated in dense cloisonne enamel with scrolling foliate and floral ornament arranged in rhythmic, symmetrical reserves, executed in rich tones of cobalt blue, turquoise, emerald green, lavender, white, rose, ochre, and black, all outlined by dark cloisons. A continuous border of turquoise bead motifs encircles the underside of the body and extends along the handle, providing a vivid contrast against the darker ground. The handle is similarly enameled and terminates in a stylized hooked scroll, its edges accented with turquoise dots. The verso bears the maker’s mark of Maria Semenova in Cyrillic, the Russian silver standard, and a scratched inventory number.
Weight: 4.9 oz., (138 g.)
L: 5 1/8 in., (13 cm.)
Very good condition overall. The enamels are largely intact with minor scattered surface wear and tiny losses visible under magnification. The gilding shows expected wear to the interior and high points. No visible repairs or restorations.
