Of oval form, the hinged box raised on four cast paw feet, the sides elaborately hand-chased with scrolling foliate ornament, rosettes, and cartouche motifs executed in high relief. The domed lid is decorated with an engraved foliate border and surmounted by a cast sculptural finial modeled as a leafy branch with fruit, symbolically referencing the etrog. The interior is gilt, with the underside of the lid decorated in repoussé with a figural scene of putti engaged in playful activity with animals in a pastoral landscape, rendered in a classical idiom. The exterior displays finely detailed hand chasing throughout, characteristic of high-quality 19th century European silverwork. The box was intended for ritual use in connection with the Jewish festival of Sukkot. The underside is stamped "STERLING" and "HAND CHASED." Europe, 19th century.

Very good overall with a nice silver patina and expected light sings of wear and use.
