A finely executed small Russian kovsh of traditional oval form with raised prow-shaped lip and scrolling handle, made in silver with fire-gilt interior and richly decorated in cloisonné enamel. The exterior is divided into alternating panels of stylized foliate and floral ornament, rendered in vivid shades of red, cobalt blue, turquoise, pale green, pink, white, and black, outlined by dark cloisons. The rim is bordered by a narrow beaded wire edge, enclosing a gilded interior with natural wear from use. The handle terminates in a scrolling flourish with polychrome enamel ornament, harmonizing with the body decoration.
Russian silver hallmarks on the verso, including a kokoshnik and an 84 silver proof mark.
Weight: 1.5 oz., (42 cm.)
L: 3 in., (7.5 cm.)
Very good condition for the type. The enamels are well preserved with small scattered losses and fine surface wear visible under close inspection. Gilding shows expected wear to the interior and underside.
