- Lot Description
Moritz Retzsch (German, 1779 - 1857), a drawing on paper 'Die Schachspieler' (The Chess Players), published in Leipzig by Ernst Fleischer circa 1831. Signed in print and dated 1831 lower right. Matted and framed. Moritz Retzsch, like many artists of his generation, was fascinated by Faust. This artwork shows a scene inspired by Faust and can be interpreted as an allegory of the Devil's battle for a man's soul.8 1/4 x 9 1/4 in., (21 x 23.5 cm.)Very good, with very light foxing consistent with age.
