An abstract sculptural Japanese metal vase of geometric architectural form, constructed from rectangular planes arranged in a cruciform silhouette, the body pierced by a horizontal rectangular aperture, creating a strong interplay of solid and void. The surface worked with a matte, subtly textured finish, retaining a restrained industrial aesthetic characteristic of postwar Japanese modernist metalwork influenced by Brutalism and Minimalism. The rectangular neck opening integrated seamlessly into the upper block, emphasizing the object’s sculptural rather than utilitarian intent. The base bears inscribed Japanese characters and numerals, likely indicating the artist’s signature, workshop mark, or edition notation. The piece exemplifies the Japanese synthesis of modern abstract form with traditional metalworking discipline, intended equally as a vessel and as an autonomous sculptural object.
