An abstract oil painting on canvas by a Japanese artist, attributed to Takeshi Kawashima, executed in a bold red and black palette and composed as a horizontally oriented work divided by a central vertical band. The composition is built from sweeping biomorphic forms with sharply defined edges set against a deep black ground, creating a strong graphic tension characteristic of postwar Japanese abstraction. The controlled, impasto-free paint application and reductive formal language reflect the synthesis of calligraphic influence and international modernist aesthetics prevalent in Japan during the late 1950s to 1960s. The reverse bears a partially legible handwritten inscription, along with directional markings indicating orientation, supporting the present attribution.
22 1/2 x 45 5/8 in.,(57.2 x 115.9 cm.)
Overall good condition with minor surface craquelure and light scratches. Light wear to canvas edges and frame consistent with age. Canvas remains well tensioned. No paint loss is visible.
