Cast bronze paperweight formed as a stylized, fragmented female nude torso with bent limbs, conceived as an abstracted reclining figure. The muscular modeling is highly expressive, with exaggerated anatomical volumes and compressed proportions characteristic of postwar American modernist sculpture. The surface retains a warm golden-brown patina with subtle variations, emphasizing the sculptural planes and tool marks. Signed "VAL STERN" on the body of the bronze. American, mid-20th century.
H: 5 1/4 in., (13.3 cm.)
Good overall condition. Typical casting seams and minor surface abrasions. Natural wear and small handling marks consistent with age and use.
