- Lot Description
Rectangular desktop writing or stationery box veneered throughout in finely figured burr walnut, the hinged lid with gently rounded profile and inlaid at center with a diamond-shaped cartouche framed in abalone, opening to a fitted interior lined in deep cobalt blue velvet bordered with gilt Greek-key tooling. The interior is arranged with stationery compartments and a lidded writing surface, retaining the original configuration intended for correspondence and desk use. The front is fitted with an abalone-inlaid escutcheon housing the keyhole, the box raised on a flat base with plain underside.
English work of the mid-Victorian period, combining restrained exterior elegance with a richly appointed interior typical of quality personal writing boxes of the era.
5 1/4 x 11 13/16 x 9 1/4 in., (13.4 x 30 x 23.4 cm.)
Condition
General good condition overall. Expected surface wear, light scratches, and minor veneer fissures consistent with age and use. Interior velvet with wear and discoloration from use. Hinges and lock present. Key not present. No major losses.
