The straight single-edged blade etched and engraved with scrollwork, strapwork panels, and a stag device carrying a branch, partially highlighted with gilt. The hilt is fitted with a finely cast scallop-shell guard, straight quillons, and a ferrule in silver. The grip is composed of carved ivory scales with age patina, surmounted by a simple, rounded pommel.
The Hirschfänger, or hunting sword, was a traditional sidearm of the German nobility and hunting guilds during the 17th–18th centuries, worn both as a practical hunting weapon and a symbol of rank. Engraved examples featuring deer or stag motifs, as seen here, reinforced the association with the chase and were often presented as gifts or ceremonial pieces.
L: 29 in., (73.7 cm.)
Very good, with expected minor pitting to the blade consistent with age. All parts tight except for clamshell piece which has a slight wiggle to it.
