A finely cast and partly gilded bronze and silvered metal oval badge surmounted by the Imperial Crown of Russia, with the central element featuring the double-headed eagle of the Russian Empire. The eagle is rendered in silvered relief, bearing the orb and scepter in its claws, superimposed over a gilt laurel-and-oak wreath.
Material: Silvered bronze.
Weight: 0.2 oz., 8 g.
This type of badge belongs to the Imperial Russian officer or academy insignia group, worn on the uniform as a distinction for graduates or members of certain elite military or civil schools.
The Imperial double-headed eagle without shield but with crown and wreath points to a general state or military academy badge, rather than a regimental badge. It is stylistically similar to:
Badges of the Imperial Corps of Pages, the Nicholas General Staff Academy, or Imperial cadet schools such as Konstantinovsky or Pavlovsky.
However, the simplified eagle (without the shield of St. George or institutional monogram) and laurel-oak composition suggest it may have been a generic Imperial emblem badge for administrative or reserve officer schools, or even a custom patriotic badge made circa 1900.
H: 1 1/8 in., (2.9 cm.)
Fair with some oxidation.
