- Lot Description
The entire exterior is clad in small rectangular and shaped panels of bone, intricately incised and blackened with floral motifs and geometric scrollwork. The lid’s top features a large central cartouche bordered with floral bands. Sides show repeating floral bursts, likely done with lac-filled sgraffito. Typical of Vizagapatam or Lucknow workshops, known for their ivory-inlaid work during British colonial rule.12 1/4 x 4 3/4 x 3 1/4 in., (31 x 12 x 7.8 cm.)Good with several visible age cracks to the ivory veneer and minor surface stains. Slight discoloration due to oxidation or handling. Some losses to inking and fine line engraving. Structure: sound, lid opens well and hinges appear original and functional.
