Of circular form, the shallow convex steel body is densely and finely engraved over its entire surface with alternating concentric bands of figural, vegetal, and epigraphic ornament. The central boss repoussé as a stylized human mask with almond-shaped eyes and a pronounced nose, set within an eight-pointed star, the surrounding field richly populated with rows of seated and standing courtly figures in traditional Qajar dress, some depicted holding musical instruments, rendered in a continuous animated procession. Four large repoussé domed bosses mounted on scalloped rosettes are evenly spaced around the center, serving both decorative and structural purposes, securing the internal grip fittings. The engraved decoration is further enriched with scrolling foliate borders and cartouches enclosing stylized Persian inscriptions in ornamental nastaʿlīq script. The inscriptions comprise repeated benedictory and auspicious phrases of a decorative nature, without identifiable personal names, dates, or maker’s signatures, and are arranged symmetrically to enhance the visual rhythm of the composition rather than to convey a continuous text. Select details heightened with traces of original gold koftgari. The rim is fitted with a brass binding. The reverse plain and finished in traditional red lacquer, with the repoussé facial boss visible from within. The shield is a highly representative example of Qajar-period revivalist metalwork, reflecting Safavid-inspired figural imagery and courtly symbolism, and intended primarily for ceremonial display or court costume rather than martial use.
D: 17 3/4 in., (45 cm.)
